The Appian Way, the 'queen of roads' of ancient Rome, leaves the city at Porta San Sebastiano and runs through a regional park of catacombs, tombs and ruined villas. This route passes the Tomb of Cecilia Metella and the Villa of the Quintilii on its way to Casal Rotondo.
Long stretches are paved with the original Roman stones and are very bumpy, so wide tyres help, and in places it's easier to walk. Traffic is limited, especially on Sundays.
