The Mount Vernon Trail follows the Virginia bank of the Potomac with views across to the monuments of Washington, DC. From Theodore Roosevelt Island it passes Gravelly Point, where planes skim overhead into Reagan National Airport, then runs through Old Town Alexandria and along the river to Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate.
The trail is popular and narrow in places, with some boardwalk sections that are slippery when wet, so ride with care, especially at weekends.
